Support Shatarra Robinson's Memorial Service

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of Shatarra Robinson's transition on the morning of Monday, August 19, 2024, at the young age of 36.

Shatarra was a loving and caring daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. Her joyful presence lit up every room she entered.

At 17, Shatarra was diagnosed with a mental health condition which changed our family's dynamics forever. The once vibrant and spirited young woman we all cherished became a dark shell of what used to be.

Despite our best efforts to seek help for Shatarra, the system failed us at every opportunity. Our Mom was appointed as her legal guardian, because the court deemed her as an incapacitated adult; however, the guardianship was not honored by many of the social agents when we attempted to seek help. In addition to having a mental disorder, Shatarra also suffered from substance use disorder. Calling the police during her episodes proved fruitless and most time pointless. Obtaining life insurance for her was impossible because we were told her mental health diagnosis and substance abuse made her uninsurable. Although the system failure to provide Shatarra with the necessary support, we are determined to turn our heartbreak into a beacon of hope for others.

Shatarra’s life mattered. Mental illness is not a death sentence and the system’s treatment of individuals suffering with these type of conditions are deplorable. There are many people in the District of Columbia suffering from mental illness and substance use disorder, and by sharing our story, we aim to raise awareness and inspire change so that no other family has to endure the pain and devastation that we are experiencing.

We kindly request any donations to assist with the cost of Shatarra's home going service. No amount is too small, and every contribution is deeply appreciated during this difficult time.

Thank you for your kindness and support.
