Support Shipibo-Communities Hard Hit by Covid-19

Together with the organisations JEC AIESHC and Obra Femenina, we are looking for funds to support families fighting Covid-19 in the indigenous community Santa Rosita de Tamaya Tipishca and Yarinacocha, a district of the city Pucallpa.

At this moment, Peru is facing it second wave of the coronavirus and indigenous communities find themselves especially affected. Food and medicine prices are rising rapidly, and many families are having to choose between buying food or medicine. As much of these families' income comes from agriculture, fishing or traditional artwork, the continues periods of strict quarantine have resulted in few selling opportunities as well as low demand for the products and many families are struggling to make ends meet.

The journey from Pucallpa to the community Santa Rosita takes about five hours by boat. It´s distance from Pucallpa, costs and risks of the journey in times of Covid-19 make it especially vulnerable facing the pandemic.  The district Yarinacocha is the part of the city Pucallpa where most indigenous people live. Most of the families living in the city have a very strong connection to the communities along the river and depend upon the interaction between the communities and the city, having for example their fields out in the communities and do often travel between the two.  Furthermore, the region is right now in the rainy season and the waters of river are growing more rapidly than usual, flooding the communities and threatening harvests complicating the situation even more.



With the donated money we plan to:

1) By medicine for families with severe Covid-19 cases.

2) Support families with food that have been economically hard hit by the crisis.

The organisations Obra femenina and JEC AIESHC (Juventud Esfuerzo Cristiano Asociación de Iglesias Evangélicas SHipibo Conibo) will be in charge of the distribution of the funds.

Obra Femenina is an initiative from women for women, organized by shipibo "mothers" with Cristian roots. They organize art and sewing workshops, as well as traditional singing and dancing workshops. This way they want to help women that find themselves alone and without support to become economically independent.



JEC AIESHC is a Cristian organisation that focuses on giving shipibo youth a perspective and a safe place, organising different types of youth camps and workshops. Many of the families of these young people, however, now find themselves in difficult situations due to the coronavirus. With this initiative JEC AIESHC hopes to be able to support them in their fight against Covid.



These donations could save lives and we would be very grateful for big as well as small  donations or simply that you share this campaign!

Estamos buscando fondos junto con las organizaciones JEC AIESHC y Obra Femenina, para poder apoyar familias luchando contra Covid-19 en la comunidad indígena Santa Rosita de Tamaya Tipishca y Yarinacocha en Pucallpa .

En estos momentos Perú esta enfrentando la segunda ola  del coronavirus y las comunidades indígenas se ven especialmente afectadas.  Precios de medicinas tanto como alimentos están subiendo rápidamente y muchas familias se ven obligadas de elegir entre la compra de comida o medicina.  Ya que mucho de los ingresos de estas familias viene de agricultura, pesca y artesanía, las continuas periodos de cuarentena estricta han resultado en escasas oportunidades  de venta tanto como baja demanda y ahora muchos se encuentran sin posibilidad de mantener sus familias.  

Para llegar a la comunidad Santa Rosita desde Pucallpa se viaja aproximadamente cinco horas. Su distancia de Pucallpa, costos y riesgos del viaje en tiempos de Covid lo hace especialmente vulnerable frente a la pandemia. El distrito Yarinacocha forma parte de la ciudad Pucallpa y es la parte de la ciudad en que vive la mayor parte de la población indígena. La mayoría de las familias viviendo en la ciudad tienen , sin embargo, una fuerte conexión con los comunidades y dependen de la interacción entre ciudad y comunidad viajando a menudo entre los dos.  Además, la región se encuentra en este momento en la temporada de lluvia y las aguas del río están creciendo con una velocidad más rápida de lo normal, amenazando las cosechas y dificultando la situación aun más. 

Con el dinero recaudado planeamos

1) Comprar medicinas para las familias en cual alguien se encuentra en un estado grave de Covid-19.

2) Apoyar las familias afectadas económicamente por el crisis  con alimentos.

De la distribución de los fondos se encargaran las organizaciones Obra Femenina y JEC AIESHC ( Juventud Esfuerzo Cristiano  Asociación de Iglesias Evangélicas SHipibo Conibo)  

Obra  Feminina,  es una iniciativa de mujeres por mujeres organizada de "madres" shipibas con raízes cristianas. Organizan talleres de artesanía y costura tanto como danza y canto y tratan, de esa manera, ayudar a mujeres que se encuentran solas y sin apoyo, de ser económicamente independientes. 

JEC AIESHC , es una organización que se concentra en dar jóvenes shipibos una perspectiva y un hogar, organizando diferentes tipos de campamentos y talleres.  Muchas de las familias de estos jóvenes, sin embargo, se ven ahora fuertemente afectados por el virus, y con esta iniciativa JEC AIESHC espera poder ayudarlos en su lucha contra Covid.
