Support Showcase Comics
Judy and I started Showcase Comics over 30 years ago. I opened the doors Jan. 3rd 1988. Wow, was it small - only 230 square feet. The original store was back in the theatre arcade in Bryn Mawr. They use it as a ticket booth now.
There weren't many comics coming out then since the direct market had just started up a few years before. Graphic novels weren't around yet and neither was Magic the Gathering. Our community was small - just a few collectors for new or back issues.
As the stores grew, so did our community. Over time, we added stores in Granite Run Mall and on South Street. Each time we moved we got bigger and bigger (you can fit 20 of our first store inside the Swarthmore store! ) So did the family. Jeff and Erin came along and grew up. And then we had Amy and Alena, who are now 13. A lot of our early customers grew up and are now bringing their kids to Showcase. Chris took over the Bryn Mawr store and he and Juliet added Molly and Lizzie to the family.
Showcase has grown. So has the community. And we'd like to stay a part of the community for another couple of decades. We're worried about that. I don't have to tell you how hard it is right now for many retailers. Our stores are closed but we still have bills to pay. And we don't know when we will open back up.
We are doing whatever we can to keep things going. Mike and Chris are shipping out what we can. We've applied for government aid and hope there is some money for us. All of our excess stock is heading to ebay. We're working from home as much as possible, but it's not enough. The rent and bills are starting to pile up.
It's hard to ask for help and I don't like to. But I have to keep the stores here for a lot more people than just me. We support 10 employees and several families. We have customers who have made the store a second home. I want to be here for a lot more Free Comic Book Days.
I'm asking for your help. The money will go towards paying the rent and other fixed costs that we have to pay even with the stores closed. Thank for your support over the years, and for anything you're able to do now. It means a lot to all of us at Showcase.
