Support SIS Alumni Affected by Job Loss
Donation protected
I am raising money to support American University School of International Service (SIS) alumni who have been impacted financially by the recent executive orders to halt USAID projects and federal grants. In the past week alone, we've been notified by 140+ alumni that they lost their job or were furloughed. Some of our alumni were just starting out in the workforce and have little savings or family cushion. While we have funds to support students who lost their jobs, we do not (yet) have a special fund for alumni. These funds will provide alumni in need with assistance to keep food on the table, and support them as they persevere in fulfilling their SIS-fueled dreams. I will keep track of all donations and what they were used for and share them with you. We have already given out $13,800 to 70+ alumni but have ~70 more people to support. Please give whatever you can. Any small amount will help. Thank you!!!
Here is a story from a recent alumnus who was supported by the fund:
"I can’t even begin to express how overcome with emotion I am right now. After getting my dream job at USAID, I was laid off at the end of January. My biggest challenge right now is taking care of medical expenses. I was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer before being laid off. Our health insurance was cut off at the end of January. The generosity and care of the SIS community is unmatched and I am just so very thankful to be part of it. I’m hopeful that some day soon I’ll be able to pay this forward to others in the community - whether alumni or current students." MA, 2024
