Support Sommer & Pulelehua's Recovery Journey
Donation protected
Please kōkua Sommer & Pulelehua. Early Sunday morning, Pulelehua was a passenger in a truck that was coming from the North Shore and was hit at a standstill while turning left at the Moloa’a fruit stand by a drunk teenager at high speed from behind. Lifeline flew her over to the Queens Neuro ICU on Oahu. She has brain bruising/little bleeding, no broken bones beside her nose, and some lacerations to her face.
Sommer, as the sole provider for herself and Pulelehua, will be unable to work while Pulelehua is in recovery on Oahu. We are collecting funds to assist in the immediate financial needs associated with this horrible situation. Please donate whatever you are able, as the power of the hui will help support her through this time.
Sommer wrote that she is grateful Pulelehua’s alive and she knows she will pull through. She ripped her ventilator out and is breathing on her own with just an oxygen mask. They are waiting for her to wake up a little more and to respond to verbal prompts, but grateful her limbs move.
Thank you all for holding her in love & pule, and all the calls & messages. She’s a strong one and will pull through.
UPDATE SEPTEMBER 10th
Sommer was so deeply touched by everyone’s generosity here. She cried with relief to let that burden go. I’m in awww at the power of love and prayer of healing. Here is Sommer’s update.
Reading everyone’s prayer and support is strengthening. Thank you all for your kind words and we appreciate all the healing thoughts sent towards Pulelehua.
She had a much more restful night tonight than the previous night. She can hear and will nod yes in response to questions if caught in the right time, and has also shown thumbs up. At one point last night I was able to ask her 3 separate questions and she was able to nod to all of them.
Her respiratory is doing so much better. Her left lung was collapsed a little due to the ventilator not inflating it when first arrived on the scene. It was fixed at Wilcox but since then her left lung hasn’t performed to its capacity. But tonight she slept with out her oxygen mask and her oxygen levels stayed high and steady, so she is out of the clear with having to put the ventilator back in.
Today the doctors would like if she could use her words, yes or no and also determine if she’s able to swallow so she drink, and hopefully not be put on a feeding tube.
Please continue to hold her in your healing thoughts & prayers, our minds & words are all so incredibly powerful. Mahalo nu’i kākou❤️
SEPT 10th
I personally want to thank all of you who have donated to hat you can for Sommer and Pulelehua. This is a prime example of how in less than 24 hrs many small contributions can make a huge difference. Sommer is feeling great love and a huge burden lifted. Mahalo nui loa to every one of you
SEPT 11th update from Sommer
We are still in the ICU, had a bit of a rough night, but this afternoon made some progress. She was able to have the collar removed, she passed the swallow test and has been okayed to drink and eat. She had a whole bowl of miso soup with tofu & wakame, yay☺️
Her lab work came back with a high white cell blood count this morning which signifies an infection. They ran a stool sample, since she had her first bowel movement since the accident and it came back positive with a C.Diff infection, which is a bacterium in the colon caused by disruption of her normal gut flora.
Her chest X-rays looked better today. Oxygen levels are normal.
Yesterday her pain medication was switched up to one that doesn’t just knock her out, so she’s a little more alert and told us her last name today and spoke a little. She’s been reaching for my hand and said mama and squished my hair bun
Her brain is still bleeding but she’s stable and it’s not getting worse.
There’s a great team of doctors here. Thank you for holding her in love & health. She’s such a precious life✨
SEPT 12 update from Sommer
Pulelehua was released from ICU yesterday evening and now in the trauma unit. She’s stood up with assistance a few times and yesterday when the physical therapist put a walker in front of her when asked to walk forward she picked up the walker and started walking
She’s aware now of where she is, but is still confused about certain things. She’s physically strong but balance isn’t quite there yet. We’ve had an extra nurse “sitter” rotation since Wednesday night, they stay in the room 24 hours with us to help keep an eye on her. It’s been relieving at night for me to be able to catch some sleep.
Pulele is still sleeping the majority of the time waking here and there, but we’re going to start working on having her on a schedule and for there to be a difference between night and day. Keep going lil butterfly✨
