Support Star's Road to Recovery

Star Sawyer is a mother of two, wife and friend to so many.  After a whirlwind of doctors visits and hospitals stays, Star has been diagnosed with Stage IV Colon Cancer and has begun the first step in her treatment.  We need your help to create a safe space for her healing. 



The Story:  Until very recently, Star was fit, healthy and full of energy.  She was working full time as a private practice Social Worker and was the primary home manager as her husband worked a rigorous job and was gone 12 hours a day or more much of the time.  In her spare time, she was an avid yoga practitioner and enjoyed other areas of movement and fitness as well. 

Suddenly, she could not get enough sleep.  She started going to bed early and was finding it harder and harder to get through her basic functions for work and family. All else fell to the wayside.  After a stomach bug ripped through the family, Star noticed that she was not recovering after the rest of the family had.  As the days passed, she found that she was struggling with eating had a very upset stomach. Star went to the doctor for blood work. 

Upon receiving the results from her tests via an unsettling weekend phone call from her doctor just two days later, Star was admitted to the hospital for an emergency blood transfusion as her hemoglobin, among other things, was dangerously low.  After the transfusion, the hospital sent her home without the appropriate testing.

Her doctor was rightly not satisfied with how the hospital performed and called for a battery of tests including a CAT scan and a colonoscopy, which revealed, 4 lesions on her liver and a tumor in her colon. 

On New Years Eve, Star began a set of chemotherapy treatments. She has a stellar medical team that we trust and we feel blessed for that.  The hope is to shrink the tumor in her colon.  The oncology team will reevaluate at the end of two months and plan for next steps if any are required. 

The ask:  We need your help.  We all know the status of health care in America.  It’s expensive and even the best private insurance won’t cover what’s coming.  Star is currently unable to work and her husband will be dialing back his work load so that he can be more available for on the ground support with their young kids and Star. 

We have an amazing community of friends, WE ARE LOOKING AT YOU!!  But what we need right now is to chip away and the bills that will continue to come, which will in turn will help us to create a safe space for Star, her husband Chris and their two children to process and heal.
