Brookson was diagnosed with mild to medium autism spectrum disorder just before his third birthday. We were concerned about his lack of communication at his 18 month well check appointment and we were told to begin early intervention with him. He received early intervention until he was 3 years old, and he was given his diagnosis. Early intervention helped Brookson to learn to sign "more" and helped with his social interactions and anxiety. It also helped to educate us as his parents on how to further help him. Once Brookson ended early intervention and received his diagnosis we were told that ABA (applied behavioral analysis) therapy would help him with daily life skills and communication. We immediately signed him up and started as soon as we could. Brookson got up to 20-25 hours a week of therapy and we continued ABA for two summers. At one point Brookson was saying "open," "ipad," "more," and was also making multiple sounds. As time went on Brookson developed some health issues such as strep and chronic ear infections which all included several rounds of antibiotics. During this time Brookson's diet just became more and more limited. He stopped eating things that he used to eat all the time. It became very difficult to get him to try new foods or foods that he used to love. Once he started special education preschool, he was offered to start a program that was specialized for autistic children. During those two years we still have not increased communication as much as we would like, and he has lost all the words that he used to say daily. With autism it seems as if we are constantly one step forward and two steps back. I have felt as his mother that something further was going on this last year. Brookson developed weeklong "flares" as I would call them where he didn't want to eat or drink, he became constipated, his separation anxiety was very intense to the point where Bryce, Baker and I couldn't go into another room or upstairs without Brookson following behind, crying. He would just pace the room and be constantly whining for a good 5-10 days straight. We battled those weeklong "flares" for a good 7 months before we finally needed to do further testing for him. We have taken him into the doctor I don't know how many times and have gotten no answers. We decided to try chiropractic care for him and have had great success with it! It has changed Brookson's life as far as his sensory issues, his receptive language (so following simple commands like "go throw that away in the garbage) which is HUGE for Brookson! His quality of sleep has increased and just his overall mood. The 'flares" did not stop completely though so we decided to spend a good chunk of money and get a stool sample test for him, we are so glad we did! We got some real answers for him and have him on a treatment plan for "pans (pediatric acute-onset neuropsychiatric syndrome) /pandas (pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections,") H. Pylori (stomach infection,) and some other digestive and gut issues. We have seen improvement with Brookson's "flares" and haven't had one in almost two months! Now we are ready for the next step in his healing journey and to hopefully give him a better quality of life as far as his autism and pandas. We have heard great things about stem cell treatment and how it can better his communication skills, his relationships, his gut and brain inflammation, eye contact, so many things. It isn't a one size fits all, but we are hopeful that it can help him and are willing to take a chance! We will be traveling to Mexico in the next couple of months to start the treatment. We would absolutely love and appreciate for anyone to support us and Brookson in this next step, as it is an expensive process. We really think it would change not only his life but our family's life.
