Support Steve Scrivens in Vermont Flood Recovery
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Leah Schulz and I have created this fundraiser for my wonderful uncle Steve Scrivens. My uncle lives on Elm Street in Montpelier and lost everything in the catastrophic flooding on July 11th, 2023. This fundraiser is to support his immediate needs such as food and clothing and expenses while navigating FEMA, lost income and insurance issues. Hopefully, our community can support him in replacing necessities and beloved items. Please consider donating to help him during this challenging time - any amount helps. Thank you!
My uncle has shared with me his experience so far, this is his story:
When he arrived back in Montpelier after work the flooding had already made the road impassable, there was nothing he could do to get to his home and move his things to higher ground. There was no warning from the town, it was already too late. Despite the loss, he is glad he hadn't been home because otherwise, he would have lost his car as well. He is an Uber Driver so without his car he would have been completely at a loss. The night of the flood he tried getting out of town, but every street he turned down would just lead to more water. He stayed in his car at the highest ground he could find and waited for news from his neighbors as the water rose in his home.
My uncle is from the UK and immigrated about 10 years ago. He brought with him only the things that mattered most. He has lost everything. Not only did his home flood, contaminated with sewer water, but as the water receded an electrical fire occurred. His second floor is covered in smoke damage. It will take several months for his place to be repaired. The losses will mean a loss of income. My uncle owns a business and works from home, he will need to replace equipment. He also has fitted his second bedroom as an Airbnb, and for the next several months will experience a significant loss of income from this disaster.
He feels fortunate his insurance will cover a hotel for the time being. However, even with the option of a hotel, there are so many out-of-pocket expenses as his insurance company has informed him that they will not replace any items destroyed in the flood. He needs basics like new clothes, purchasing food while without a kitchen, and other necessities, the list is endless.
I don’t know anyone who works as hard as my uncle. I hope that we can show him support during this difficult time. Please consider donating, Thank you.
