CU Independent: Support Student Media
The CU Independent (CUI), the student-run news source for the University of Colorado Boulder, has a long history, starting as the Campus Press, launching its website in 1994 (the first newspaper website in Colorado) and becoming the first major college newspaper to go digital-only in 2006. For the past few years we have also published a magazine once each semester. We have received many awards from the Society of Professional journalists and ranked in the prestigious Hearst Student Journalism competition.
In December 2019, CU's College of Media, Communication & Information (CMCI) announced the university would stop funding the CUI as of summer 2020. The CMCI's new business model is to produce a separate news website with student staff under the guidance of a faculty director and working with faculty mentors.
We have one semester to transition to a fully independent organization.
Because of this decision, the CUI will need to become self-sustaining and seek outside funding sources. This GoFundMe campaign is one way to achieve this goal.
The CUI currently produces a website at www.cuindependent.com that is updated daily with breaking news, investigative reporting, features, sports, entertainment and opinion from the perspective of the students, for the campus community and Boulder, Colorado.
Your support will allow us to start our new chapter outside of the CMCI with the resources necessary to operate our website, pay for printing our magazine, and to pay the very small stipends that our editors receive for their passionate, dedicated work.
We thank you for any help in any amount you can offer, so that independent student journalism can continue at the University of Colorado, outside of CMCI.
