Support Student-Led Portable Spaces Build
Donation protected
Hello! We are university students, Aida Ayuk and Luke Korzenko, from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s School of Architecture. While we are full-time students in Upstate NY, we are representing our communities in Takoma Park, MD and Lindenhurst, NY.
Our proposed design-build project for Summer 21’ is a mobile, small-scale space for performing and recording music called Studio H. This unusual architectural program introduces the constraints of a purpose-built room for music creation to the recently popular typology of ‘tiny’ portable construction. We are particularly interested in how this project could serve as a model for other forms of portable, low-impact construction intended for community use while addressing issues related to homelessness, aging housing stock, and lack of community access to resources for economic and cultural production.
Upon project completion, the studio space will be showcased and interacted with by various communities. Within the RPI community, the studio will be made available for student use on campus. There is also an opportunity for external community engagement at the Troy Farmers Market by creating a participatory experience for market patrons. The project’s potential uses could include but aren’t limited to a pop-up performance space, recording studio, or rehearsal room.
As we consider the future life cycle of the completed project, we intend for the studio to be used for artistic production by the future owner. Potential options include continued student use on the RPI campus or a donation to a local library or community center. The flexible nature of the structure will present an opportunity for future users to adapt the space to their particular studio needs.
Our mission is to engage students in hands-on learning, introduce students to the processes and responsibilities of project management, and inspire students to pursue ambitious projects.
Your donations will be going directly to material, site, and safety equipment expenses. Thank you for your support and we look forward to making this proposal a reality!
