Support Tabasum's Journey to Freedom

I am James McCants and I run a small tour company called Alaskan Binoculars in Juneau Alaska. Starting a small business challenges you. One challenge I required help with was my social media accounts. I knew exactly who to turn to: Tabasum. We had liked and commented on some of the same social media posts. Having messaged me directly on the plight of women in Afghanistan, I knew we could help eqch other. I needed a Social Media Coordinator. Tabasum, currently works from home in Kabul Afghanistan. This is her story in her own words:

I'm not sentimental, it's pain of our lives in Afghanistan!

Since taking power, the Taliban has adopted stricter measures for women. In cities like Kabul, some women cover their hair with headscarves, and some have recently added covid-style face masks. The presence of women in many public places in Afghanistan is prohibited .

And women's voices are being silenced, and in some places completely silenced, as women and girls are driven from public spaces to their homes by the Taliban's new edicts.

There are no women representatives in the parliament. Parliament is closed.

Music is banned in all places, especially almost all songs by female and male singers. All female journalists are jobless now.

Small groups of Afghan women boldly take to the streets, but the protests quickly disperse. The most prominent activists sometimes disappear in custody.

I really miss the freedom and happiness we had!

Before August 15 when Taliban returned to power , I was in the office at this time or reading university books, and when we wanted to leave the office after 4:00 PM, we walked from the office to our homes.”

"It was a 30-40 minute walk from work to our house and we enjoyed walking and talking on the way. We stopped at cafes and restaurants to have some fun. Now I really miss the happiness we had. I even miss the tiredness I had after entering the house.

Now I'm tired of doing nothing during the day. I can't even go out with a calm mind. When we want to go outside we would leave the city recently and go straight home again. I didn't want to face them (Taliban), so I was trying to go home as soon as possible. I have no hope for my future. "We are forbidden to do anything except stay at home and become more and more depressed day by day."
