As we all know Tenile embodies positivity, hard work, creativity and unwavering support for her family and friends. She is a true warrior. In May 2021, she bravely faced a stage 1 colorectal cancer diagnosis and fought through it with incredible strength and resilience; undergoing surgery in November 2021 to remove the tumor and a follow-up surgery to reverse her ostomy in February 2022.
Unfortunately, in August 2024, as she approached three years cancer free we received the heart-wrenching news that Tenile's cancer had returned. Scans revealed nodules on her lungs, liver, and left leg, and this time, chemotherapy became a necessity for her stage 4 diagnosis . For the past six months, she has received 12 sessions of treatment. Technically, the 12th session will take place January 29th. Each session is a three-day process: Day 1 includes three hours of onsite treatment followed by a portable infusion at home, Day 2 is the home treatment, and Day 3 is when she disconnects from the treatment. The side effects have been challenging, including but not limited to extreme fatigue, nausea, nose bleeds and loss of appetite. Through it all, Tenile has maintained high spirits and positivity. We are hopeful as mid-treatment scans have shown that the nodules have decreased in size, and additional scans are scheduled for Wednesday January 22nd to guide her Oncology team for the next steps.
Despite these challenges, Tenile continues to impress us all. She has remained enrolled in her nursing program at the University of Las Vegas, tirelessly pursuing her dream of becoming a midwife. While undergoing treatment, she has completed two semesters with excellent performance, and is starting her final semester. This wouldn't be possible without the understanding and support of her professors and cohort. Additionally, she currently works part-time. While extremely grateful for her managers and coworkers who have been so accommodating, the drop to part-time hours has required covering insurance premiums out of pocket. Even with everything on her plate, Tenile finds time to be there for her family, friends and Captain. We are constantly in awe of her determination and resilience; she refuses to let her diagnosis slow her down, even when we wish she would take a moment to rest.
As Tenile enters this next stage of her journey, we are reaching out to her community to surround her with love and support. Whether it's prayers, well wishes, or funny memes on Instagram, it all makes a difference. Tenile is open about her journey and shares her updates on Instagram @tenilethecancersurvivor; it's typically in her story so you have to catch them there.
Thank you for being part of Tenile's community. She is deeply grateful for all the love she has received during this challenging time. Together, let’s continue to uplift this extraordinary warrior.
With love and appreciation
