Nurturing Resilience in Gaza

Thamra, which means "fruit" in Arabic, was founded in 2024 by two passionate Palestinians—farmer Yousef Abu Rabea and photographer Leena Almadhoun. With roots deeply embedded in the land and communities of Gaza, Thamra strives to address food insecurity and promote resilience through sustainable agricultural practices and community-driven initiatives.

OUR FOUNDERS

Yousef Abu Rabea
A 24-year-old farming engineer from Beit Lahia in Northern Gaza, where he comes from a long lineage of farmers. The family has cultivated Red Gold strawberries on land nourished by groundwater from the Hebron mountains in the West Bank. However, the occupation has brought severe challenges, including the construction of dams that prevent this vital groundwater from reaching the Gaza Strip.

The ongoing genocide has devastated farmlands, with artillery-borne white phosphorus, a potent carcinogen, poisoning the soil and making crops unsafe to consume.

Yousef's story is a reflection of the struggles faced by many Palestinian farmers, who have been historically targeted by the occupation. They endure heavy restrictions that control the region’s food supply and suffer immensely from displacement, systemic starvation, and violent attacks. After returning home Yousef has successfully planting over 40,000 seedlings of peppers and eggplants in farms around Beit Lahia. Through Thamra, he has also planted approximately 15,000 seedlings in family gardens, contributing to food security and self-sufficiency in his community.

Leena Almadhoun
A 21-year-old psychology student and photographer, represents the resilience of young Gazans. Her family, originally from Majdal, was displaced in 1948, and her grandparents sought refuge in Jabalia refugee camp and eventually settled in Beit Lahia, hoping to one day return home.

Today, Leena works with UNRWA shelter schools in Beit Lahia, providing critical support to thousands of children traumatized by the ongoing genocide. She focuses on helping these children navigate social and developmental challenges. While balancing her studies, Leena captures the beauty and struggles of her community through her photography, advocating for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Having experienced displacement and loss, Yousef returned to Beit Lahia and salvaged seeds from the dry fields left behind. Together with his brothers, he sowed those seeds, revitalizing his family's agricultural legacy. Through Thamra, we seek to instill a sense of self-sufficiency in the Palestinians who lack the resources to cultivate nourishing food for themselves.

YOUR DONATIONS WILL HELP US:

1. Providing Fresh Produce: We work tirelessly to ensure that the people of Gaza have access to fresh vegetables and fruits, contributing to the overall health and nutrition of our communities.

2. Building Urban Food Gardens: Thamra is dedicated to creating urban gardens in homes—whether on balconies, in gardens, or atop rooftops. We empower families to grow their own food, promoting sustainability and self-reliance.

3. Restoring Water Access: Clean water is essential for life. We aim to repair and restore water wells in neighborhoods throughout Gaza, ensuring that our communities have access to this vital resource.
