Support The Bera Family

Donation protected
On Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at 8:45pm (IST), our family suffered from the tragic loss of Dr. Surendra Nath Bera (known to many as Jhupa) who was fighting a very hard battle against COVID-19. He was only 35 years old, a doctor, with no underlying health conditions. He worked bravely and selflessly during the global pandemic to help his patients, and ultimately contracted COVID-19 from a patient. He leaves behind a very young family; his wife Swati Bera, and two precious sons: Iman (5 years old), and Ishan (only 2 months old). The family is going through so much uncertainty as he was the sole provider, and his wife Swati is still recovering from COVID-19 herself. Due to restrictions set in place by the pandemic, Dr. Surendra Nath Bera had to suffer his last week on Earth at the hospital alone, without any family or friends by his side. In addition, his family is unable to recover his body and perform the traditional rituals for cremation due to government rules. It is devastating for his family.

Surendra was one of the most generous people the family knew; he gave free medical advice, free medicine, and even money to buy medicine to anyone in need. He especially helped those less fortunate living in poverty. On his Saturday mornings, he’d use his free time to travel to his village bazaar to see and treat patients for little or no cost, even though it was not part of the private practice. He was so hardworking and he always had a smile on his face.  He tried so hard to make life better for his children, wife, and parents - a better life than what he grew up in. Not only did he support his immediate family with his income, but also his parents, his brother and sister and their families. He always provided the entire Bera family with his words of wisdom if we ever had a medical emergency and came to our rescue many times. He had a lifelong ambition to serve the community and make the world a better place. Earlier this spring, a local school had to shut down due to the pandemic. Surendra generously volunteered to pay the teachers’ salaries until the school reopens.  He also donated food during the COVID-19 pandemic to those in need. He was generous beyond words – even as a father to a newborn son and as a doctor treating COVID-19, he spent the time, money, and energy to help the others around him.

Now, Surendra and his family need our help. Every dollar will go to provide immediate support for his widowed wife and 2 kids, his medical bills, and the education of his children and their future.  Your donation will help provide for his wife and sons in the way that they all deserve and make an attempt to soften the blow of this terrible tragedy.

We understand that you may not be in a position to be able to donate, if that is the case we would greatly appreciate you sharing this link (with your network of family, friends, religious affiliations, etc.), in the hopes it reaches more people.

Even if you can donate, please still consider sharing so this reaches more people. If we all come together, we can change the future for his wife and 2 small kids who tragically lost their loving husband and father. His family is incredibly grateful for your donation.

Surendra Nath loved his family more than anything.

This is his 5 year old son Iman, with his newborn baby brother. He was born on Father's Day this year. Surendra Nath was so happy on this joyous day!

Growing up, Surendra Nath became interested in helping others at an early age. He pursued his medical degrees realizing the need for more qualified doctors for people in the village. He worked incredibly hard to get the chance to study as a doctor, quite a feat in itself as it is very competitive in India. At first he practiced medicine in a very rural hospital in a village.  There were no roads or electricity. Surendra was always interested in helping those in impoverished areas. After a series of highly competitive exams, he was granted admission into a prestigious medical college and hospital. In 2016 he received his M.D. degree with a Gold Medal (the student who secures highest marks in each subject is honoured with this).
