On December 18th, 2023, Manny Bernardez underwent quintuple bypass surgery, necessitating a three-week stay in the hospital. Regrettably, during this period, he experienced complications including fever, infection and a series of strokes. He was subsequently admitted to the Helen Hayes Rehab Center, where he is presently undergoing physical and speech therapy.

If you know Manny, you know the most important things in his life are his family at home, followed by his family of officials, referees and umpires. His positive presence on the field and on the court is unparalleled. He cares about being the best father and husband as well as being the best partner to his fellow officials. There is no one who can say they didn’t learn something from a game they worked with Manny. Whether it is rec basketball, the Bergen and Passaic County Baseball Championships, the Bergen Jamboree, or the Baseball State Tournament Finals, Manny acts as a true professional and makes everyone he works with better.

In light of the health issues Manny is dealing with, and the long road to recovery ahead, the Bernardez family is accepting support in the form of donations to assist with Manny's medical expenses.
