Support the Cast of American Psycho
Utah Repertory Theatre Company's production of "American Psycho" has been the subject of recent controversy and a catalyst for the exposure of unsafe and unethical practices at the company. These practices have persisted for years, and it's overdue for the larger Utah theatre community to actively encourage responsibility, transparency, and positive change.
As many boycott the current production and Utah Rep, it's important to place that burden squarely on the shoulders of Utah Repertory Theatre Company and not on the actors who have labored in unethical conditions. Among the issues reported are: racist comments made to minority cast members, unwanted sexual advances from those in positions of authority, unsafe scenery/staging, neglectful safety procedures, unreasonable burden of travel with short notice, unreasonable addition of rehearsals without notice, disrespect for the time and work of artists and technicians, verbal/emotionally abuse, and evidence of drugs administered without knowledge or consent at cast parties.
Despite these issues, many in the cast felt unable to withdraw from the production for fear of personal and/or professional consequences. Today, with bravery and grace, almost all of the remaining cast members walked out in solidarity.
Whether you have purchased a ticket to "American Psycho" or not, please consider donating. These funds will go toward medical bills, counseling, travel expenses, etc. related to injuries, adverse mental health, and other hardships endured by the cast throughout this process, as well as helping to compensate for forfeit performance pay. Funds will be distributed evenly among the current cast at the time of writing, excluding Johnny Hebda, founder of Utah Repertory Theatre Company.
Recommended donation: the approx. price of your tickets ($20 ea.) or whatever feels most appropriate to you. Larger donations make a big difference, but every little bit helps.
Delivery method: To ensure each beneficiary receives an even share, funds will be withdrawn by the organizer to a single account and then distributed via certified funds or PayPal per each recipient's preference.
