Our father, Doug Lewis passed away in the afternoon of January 29th 2021, in the company of one of his oldest and dearest friends in her house in Lexington, Kentucky.
Doug was many things to many people. He was both father and son. He was both friend, and lover. He was a poet, musician, author, artist, traveler, an all around incredible being. He was a one of a kind, and touched many peoples’ hearts in his own unique way.
Doug fought a long, hard battle with both cancer and Hepatitis C. He was diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer, in 2001. His journey was tumultuous and painful yet filled with magic right up until the end. He was determined to live as much of his life as he could. Some dubbed him immortal because his will to endure his burden seemed supernatural at times.
He was strong, and brave and lived to the edge of what was possible.
Doug lived a simple life. In the later part of his life he was unable to maintain a job. He had no health insurance or traditional income. He fought his battle on his own terms. His greatest legacy is his music and the beautiful home he lovingly tended.
The music we have, however our family has been fighting a long and incredibly stressful legal battle since he passed to clear title on his home- a small parcel of land in Moffit, CO, nestled in the San Luis Valley. His home was a sanctuary that he fondly named Red Cloud Ranch. Doug poured his heart, soul and every ounce of his dwindling energy into Red Cloud Ranch. He lived in a small house on the property and had an airstream trailer which created a modest Airbnb income stream during the summer months.
We hoped to sell the property so that we could settle his estate and clear his bills. He has a deed of trust with the former land owner who refuses to release the lien on the property for what Doug legally owes. Consequently, we are unable to sell the house and we have a mountain of legal fees and ongoing maintenance costs to pay, as we have had to take legal action to secure the property.
Our family is currently struggling to pay all of the expenses out of pocket, and we are asking for support from the community to help us claim our father’s property and bring completion to this challenging and tender situation.
Aside from settling his debts, legal fees, and the expenses of maintaining the property as it is now, we are hoping to raise funds to create a memorial for our father and do what we can to preserve his memory and creative legacy, which includes publishing his work.
