As a country boy growing up in Burgaw, NC, I could not even fathom, let alone imagine being a theatre owner. Still, I am today one of the proud owners of the Harlem Theatre in the Harlem Park Neighborhood of West Baltimore. An impoverished neighborhood that has long been neglected but deserves a first-class venue for the arts. I am so blessed to be able to play a small part in revitalizing the theatre and community that I fell in love with.
Where some see blight, I see an opportunity for restoration, renewal, and hope. For example, when I talk to legacy residents about the Harlem Theatre, their eyes light up as they tell the stories of how they loved going to the theatre in its glory days and how it was a haven and gathering space for Black families during segregation.

The Harlem Theatre received Landmark Designation on 11 October 2022 from the Baltimore City Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation. However, many steps must be taken to obtain funding associated with having landmark designation.
I, along with my partners, acquired the Harlem in late 2019 with plans to transform the
building into a multi-purpose cultural arts facility, which would serve as an anchor for a
cultural arts village owned and operated by the community. But, COVID-19 forced us to close the doors to the public until March 2022. However, the building was used as a food distribution center during the pandemic. By God’s grace, we managed to pay for everything on our own, but now we need your help.
The funds raised through this campaign will help us repair the leaky roof and install a heating and air condition system that will efficiently heat and cool a 30,000-square-foot building. It will also help us pay the costly utility bills and taxes and ensure that we can continue to provide critical resources to the most vulnerable in the community. Any amount, great or small, is appreciated!
