Support the Harry Kerr Memorial Photography Bursary

In May 2022, we lost a remarkable figure in the world of fine art photography with the passing of Harry Kerr. Harry was not just a photographer; he was a catalyst for creativity, a mentor to many, and a vital part of both the Glasgow and Donegal cultural scenes.

As an alumnus and former staff member of the respected Glasgow School of Art, Fine Art Photography Department, Harry's impact on the artistic community was significant. From being the recipient of the first Richard Hough Bursary to creating exhibitions like 'Sense and Science', Harry's contributions were as varied as they were important. His influence extended beyond his own work; he shared his passion for creative expression and excellence in execution throughout his life. He was always generous with his vast photographic skills and knowledge, facilitating opportunities for students and artists and fostering a culture of collaboration and growth.

Harry used many “cameras”. He made digital, analogue and iPhone photographs as well as documentary films. He revisited the American west to make photographs with a heavy duty large format camera. He made playful, poetic snapshots with a plastic toy camera. In an age of rapidly increasing technological development and image saturation what mattered was not the tool but what was being communicated - the art of “making” photographs; photography that increases our emotional knowledge, that could capture the complexities of life and encourage us to look anew at the world.

Today, we have the opportunity to honour Harry's memory and continue his legacy through the Harry Kerr Memorial Photography Bursary. This bursary is particularly aimed at supporting early career photographers, on the north west coast of Ireland and Scotland, from Strandhill to Stornaway, who may have limited financial resources but demonstrate exceptional talent and commitment to their craft.

By donating to this bursary, you can help us ensure that Harry's dedication to nurturing emerging talent lives on. Your contribution will directly impact the next generation of photographers, providing them with the financial support they need to achieve their ambitions.

Our goal is to raise €25,000 to fund five bursaries of €5,000 per year for the next five years, providing ongoing support to deserving artists. Together, we can keep Harry's memory alive and continue his mission of fostering creativity, technical skill and artistic excellence.

Join us in honouring Harry Kerr's legacy and supporting the future of photography. Your donation, no matter the size, will make a difference in the lives of aspiring artists and help preserve Harry's lasting impact on the artistic community.

Thank you for considering a donation to the Harry Kerr Memorial Photography Bursary.

The bursary is being administered by Artlink, Fort Dunree, County Donegal, Ireland.
