What is the Hazara Encyclopaedia? https://hazarapaedia.org/en/what-is-hazara-encyclopaedia/
Score of the study:
The Hazara Encyclopaedia project is one part of - and an introduction to - a greater and more extensive proposal of the Encyclopaedia of Afghanistan’s Ethnicities. This project aims to build a base of knowledge and information about Afghan society and its culture as a whole. Considering that Afghanistan is comprised of nearly 50 ethnic groups including Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras and Uzbeks, very few extensive and reliable studies have been conducted on them thus far.
Aim of the project:
The Hazara Encyclopaedia has great academic importance in Afghanistan, considering that there is a serious dearth of high-quality, scholarly information on Afghan society and its ethnic groups. Importantly, however, the encyclopaedia is not only an academic reference. Whilst our work is academic research, our aims more broadly support a wide range of needs for Afghan civil society and seek to protect and amplify Afghan voices within the country and abroad.
Our project aims are:
● To fill this aforementioned dearth of knowledge and information in Afghanistan’s academic literature base and act to improve the level of education in the country.
● To empower and upskill Afghans themselves, with our field researchers and writers. We especially seek to employ women, refugees, and other minority groups. Following the Taliban takeover, many people could not work including those in civil society and activism.
● Longer-term, the above aims are working towards capacity building and ensuring sustainability in the field of research, publishing, and academia in Afghanistan.
● To protect the rights of all ethnic minority groups by giving evidence of their role in the politics, culture, history, and nation-building of Afghanistan. This will enable minority groups to be fairly represented and minimise persecution against them.
● To provide relevant researchers, institutions and states in western countries with a reliable, factual, academic reference about the highly complex and shrouded culture of Afghanistan and of thousands of Afghan refugees.
● We hope that this integration of the diaspora will act as a response to the identity crisis that the new generation of Afghan diaspora faces in the West. This is the generation that often do not have a good understanding of their mother language and native nation.
