My name is J.P. Gairhan, and I am a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant living in Tsabong, Botswana. In partnership with my colleague and Fulbright alum Christinah Hambira, we have launched the Kgalagadi Women's Empowerment Centre (KWEC). KWEC is an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) that is the first of its kind in our community and region. Our mission is to advocate on behalf of the social, political, and economic equity that is inherent to all women and children living in Kgalagadi District, Botswana. We are asking for $2,500 as seed funding for the organization. These funds will help us secure permanent office space for at least one year and conduct a region-wide community census to assess and develop our program mission throughout the region. The district is over 40,000 square miles large, and our hope is conduct census-gathering in at least four separate geographic areas in the region. Seed funding also helps build internal infrastructure, enabling us to fully equip an office with Wi-Fi, office supplies, and further professionalize the organization.
Kgalagadi District is routinely recorded as one of the most impoverished regions in Botswana. Our residents live in some of the nation's most rural and inaccessible areas. The COVID-19 pandemic has compounded many of our challenges and further exacerbated community problems. We believe that there is real need for an NGO like the Kgalgadi Women's Empowerment Centre. Christinah often says, "An educated mother will raise an educated child." This belief is core to our values and crucial to why we decided to start the NGO. There needs to be a organization that serves our region and is based here too. Christinah was born in Kgalagadi District, in the village of Omawaneno, and it has always been her home. As the founding Executive-Director of the Kgalagadi Women's Empowerment Centre, she is ready to serve. Please support our project and choose to invest in Kgalagadi women and children!
