Support the Kicknosway's through stroke recovery
Donation protected
Hi there, my name is Ashlee and I have created this account on behalf of our family to help pay for residual medical expenses that has occurred within the past year.
On March 6th, 2023 my husband Devan Kicknosway was working out in our garage. He sat up from the workout bench and had gotten dizzy and nauseous. He didn't know but, sometime prior he had dissected his carotid artery. He was supporting himself on the workout bench. After a few minutes he was fine the symptoms he had went away. Then about 20 minuets later he started to see double. After a few minuets that symptom also went away. He showered and got ready for bed. in the middle of the night (1am) he woke up from sleep trying to get up but unable to move his right side. When I talked to him and asked him questions he was unresponsive to me. I immediately called 911. He was rushed to the nearest hospital. There the doctor informed me that he was having a stroke, and well past the window to receive the medication that helps dissolve a stroke. The neurology team at U of U hospital wanted him life flighted to their location for surgery. Because the current hospital wasn't equipped to perform the surgery that he needed. My kids and I watched their dad get ready for his flight to the next hospital.
By the time my kids and I reached the hospital Devan was already in surgery. At 6 am I was notified that his surgery was a success. However, it takes 7 days to ensure that the brain doesn't swell from the trauma. The neurologist informed me that he would have some deficits due to the location of his stroke. When I finally got to see him, his speech was gone, and he couldn't use his right arm. The speech therapist informed me that he had sever apraxia and aphasia. Devan spent a month and a half for recovery and rehabilitation in the hospital.
The recovery has been a long and hard process for our whole family. The trauma to each of us has left a lasting impression. While we all continue to recover as a family our main goal is to support Devan as much possible. We as a family have always had a appreciation for life but this set back has shown us how precious and short it can possibly be.
It has taken all of our savings and we still have a bit more medical debt to pay off. However, trying to pay regular bills and the medical debt is becoming increasingly difficult on a single income. We are tying to keep our heads afloat as we navigate the hardship we never anticipated.
Any contributions big or small will go to the remaining medical debt and any future therapies needed. We appreciate your love and generosity.
