If you didn't know KJ Mills, there was likely only six degrees of separation. He left quite a mark on the little community he grew up in. He was a soft-spoken country boy, sweet, with a heart of gold. He was raised on the lake and in the woods with his Daddy, who taught him everything there was to know about the outdoors, while his Momma instilled the importance of hard work, penny-pinching, and education.

Although he was reserved and quiet, during his time at Wilson Central High School, he found his voice in FFA. He worked his way through the ranks and graduated as Chapter President in 2020. He spent all four years of high school on the Mt. Juliet Fishing Team, where he honed his skills and found his true passion, but agriculture was his ambition.

KJ started working at the age of 15 with our neighbor and friend, Mike Sanders. Mike taught him the importance of building relationships and showed him how to run a small business successfully. At 18, KJ started his own landscaping business, Living On the Hedge Lawn Care. His business venture exploded and ultimately funded his admission to MTSU, where he studied Agriculture Education. He's been quoted many times, saying, "I want to plant seeds and watch them grow in others." He had no idea how many seeds he planted without even trying.

KJ continued to help out on the Mt. Juliet Fishing Team as a Captain, and in 2023/24, he was Captain for his younger brother, Owen, which was so special to both of them. As he wrapped up his junior year at MTSU in May 2024, he was looking forward to being an FFA Camp Leader the following month, where, again, he would have the opportunity to be a role model to Owen and the other FFA students.

On May 19, 2024, KJ went out on the lake for the last time. The smallest accident resulted in KJ being flung from a boat. He was not wearing a life jacket.

His death has devastated our family, as well as his fiancée, but we all strive every day to be more like KJ. We live our lives in his honor and make decisions based on what we think would make him happy.

We are working with Wilson Central High School FFA to raise funds for the KJ Mills Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship will be awarded annually to rising college freshmen who are majoring in Agriculture Education. Any donations will be greatly appreciated, and a video of the scholarship being awarded on May 14, 2025, will be shared with all who donate.

Thank you so much.
