What can I say about the man? He was the coach, as in Coach Robert Salinas, known for making fighters in the world of boxing. A sport he loved with a passion, making fighters like Mike Zena and Joaquin "Killer" Gallardo. But more than that, he was a father and the best grandfather who ever was. He loved all his grandchildren, from his first grandson Julian, who started boxing with his grandfather at the age of 3, to his straight "A" student Nevaeh, and let's not forget his artist Valentino, master anime drawer in training. To his girly girl Cathy, to his youngest grandbaby Maddie, his newest addition to the family. But more than that, he was a man of the people and of the community, always giving back by taking kids off the streets to stay out of trouble and have something to do or go to after school. By having them train at the gym, learning to box like professional fighters, learning discipline, and learning the history of this great sport. Providing for families with food or supplies they needed to live rather than suffer in the world, he won a recognition award from the city of Hayward for his great contribution to the city of Hayward. What more can I say? He was a man of the people, a family man, the best grandfather any grandchild could ask for, who was always there for his grandchildren no matter what or the cost. The coach who was known for driving around the Bay Area with the signature burgundy '96 Cadillac Seville.

Coach always gave a helping hand to those who needed it. Coach Robert Salinas inspired us all to go to school, be something greater than we were let on to be, or pursue training in the gym to be a prize All-Star athlete like Canelo Alvarez or Julio Cesar Chavez. Something great is what he inspired to achieve in all of us.
