In December of 2013, at age 41, Mickey was diagnosed with Colon Cancer. During that year he underwent a very aggressive and involved surgery to remove the tumor. The following year brought many struggles as he endured chemotherapy as well as multiple hospitalizations to treat complications of his surgery. All of this was in addition to working as a professor of special education at Kansas State University, being a husband, and a father of 5.
Despite all of the heartache and struggle, Mickey and wife Lisa have persevered despite a laundry list of procedures to stay ahead of the cancer and retain as much quality of life as possible. At this point he has endured more than 20 rounds of chemo and more than 10 major surgical procedures. This has left him quite uncomfortable, exhausted, and most importantly he no longer ”bounces back” like he has in the past.
Life has not been easy for Mickey and Lisa. He can no longer sleep on a flat bed -needing instead to be upright to keep his lungs clear. As of now, mickey’s prognosis is less than a year, and few options remain for treatment. Chemotherapy is on the table but Mickey is currently refraining from starting for a number of reasons, but may in a few months. In the coming year, the Losinski family will endure tremendous challenges. Immediately there is a need for a comfortable adjustable bed to keep Mickey upright and allow him to rest. Then, there will be copays, deductibles, and a large share of costs as chemotherapy treatments will be expensive. There is no guarantee as to Mickey’s quality of life during his remaining time, but with your support some financial pressures can be alleviated.
