Support the Meru District Hospital, Tengeru

Donation protected
Imagine going in for a surgery knowing your chance of getting a post-operation infection is significant due to unsterile equipment. Imagine being given the same dose of an antibiotic, regardless of the procedure, and hoping it’s enough for you to survive. These concerns are the realities at the Meru District Hospital in Tengeru, Tanzania. (See Donor Documentation for total raised so far, more than half way there!)

My name is Trevor Marshall, and I am raising funds to purchase medical supplies to support this hospital. I am paying for all my travel expenses and housing accommodations. All the donated funds will go directly towards buying medical equipment for the hospital. Unlike hospitals in the U.S., this facility is extremely underfunded and lacks medical resources in all departments. On the outskirts of the main town, Arusha, this hospital serves mostly people from the surrounding villages. I found this hospital when looking for ways to help serve disadvantaged communities. After much researching online, I managed to contact a friend of a friend of a friend’s friend, who eventually connected me with the hospital manager.

The manager I am in contact with gave me a list of basic items that the hospital desperately needs to handle their daily overflow of 200 patients (List of Items Needed + details). The hospital primarily serves as a women’s health center and maternity ward but has been trying to expand to address all general health problems. They have recently created a diabetes, outpatient, tuberculosis, and surgery clinic. This expansion has led to an uneven distribution of resources in the hospital which leads to compromised healthcare services. Sometimes the crowding is so bad that two to three pregnant women have to share a bed at night. I am looking to raise money to purchase certain necessary items, so this group has the minimum resources needed to provide quality healthcare to their patients. Also, I am currently an intern at Palomar Hospital in Escondido, California, so I will be spending five weeks assisting the staff at the hospital in addition to providing them with these supplies.

Any donation to help support this cause is deeply appreciated by myself, and most importantly, every recipient at the Meru District Hospital. Thank you all for taking the time to read this and considering supporting this hospital in great need.

Logistics
I have attached a google sheets document with links to all the items and the number needed. I will track ongoing donation amounts, the dates they were received, and specifically which items they will be used to buy (attached below). All the items should cost around $6,583, so I set the goal to $7,000 to provide flexibility. Of course, if we exceed this goal that is even better as this hospital needs all the help it can get. Once I have all the items purchased, I will fly to Tanzania with them (flight leaves 3/29/22 and returns 5/11/22) and distribute them to the different hospital departments accordingly. I am paying for all my travel expenses and housing accommodations. All the donated funds will go directly towards buying medical equipment for the hospital. Please don't hesitate to contact me below about any questions regarding my mission. I am happy to talk or do a zoom call to discuss further details.
