UPDATE: The premiere issue of the ULTRA-RED Journal is out and available directly from the Rab-Rab Press at http://www.rabrab.net/shop
We are excited to introduce our new journal ULTRA-RED: A Journal of Militant Sound Inquiry. Published by the Helsinki-based Rab-Rab Press, the journal investigates movement-based listening practices that take the forms of militant inquiry and political education. The debut issue of ULTRA-RED will be released around the world later this summer 2024. At the same time, the collective behind the journal has begun to develop lines of inquiry that will result in future journal issues.
We are launching this GoFundMe campaign to raise support for the journal’s editorial work, which has been entirely self-funded for three years. This is an opportunity to support the work of independent movement researchers and radical organizers based in multiple national contexts. Your support will help us bring attention to critical insights emerging from experimental forms of militant pedagogy that are embedded in working-class and poor people’s movements.
The journal emerges from the international sound art and popular education collective, Ultra-red (est. 1994). Initially rooted in AIDS activism and the harm reduction movement, today Ultra-red are a collective of organizers, educators, and artists.
The ULTRA-RED journal connects local struggles across contexts, features in-depth interviews with movement educators and organizers, publishes ongoing dispatches from the field, as well as reflections on the problems of militant sound inquiry through poetry, book responses, letters, and visual art. The premiere issue of ULTRA-RED examines “conjunctural analysis,” or “naming the moment,” as a practice of collective inquiry.
We welcome any donation and invite people to give generously if you’re excited about the journal and have appreciated Ultra-red’s work over our thirty years. In the words of Ultra-red, “No movement without listening!”
