Dear Family and Friends of Tom and Ali Snell,
As most of you already know by now, dear Tom died on Monday, May 17. He was at home with his family and in the days leading up to his death, he continually checked in with Ali, constantly wanting to know if she was okay. He was of course concerned for her wellbeing, but it was also his way of asking for reassurance that she would be okay after he was gone. Although heartbreaking to witness, it was also beautiful to see that until the end, he just wanted to know that Ali would carry on without him. And she will, because she always does. But many of you have asked how you can help, so we wanted to provide some updates here.
First, thank you for the incredible generosity you have shown Tom and Ali and their children in the past four years and especially recently. You have provided not just financial support but you’ve also given of yourselves, and that has meant so much to Tom and Ali and those who love them. With your donations, Ali was able to care for Tom and provide for the children through every step of his illness. She could order take-out at a moment’s notice, pay for childcare to maintain consistency in Ivy and Isaac’s lives, cover exorbitant parking and toll costs when she was driving to Sloan daily, get groceries and medical/cleaning supplies delivered, and order new furniture and rearrange items in the home for Tom’s comfort, among other things. Some of these things she simply could not have done without financial support.
Now, she enters a new stage as she navigates the next steps of her life as a single parent while she grieves and helps the children process their feelings. As she begins this work of keeping her word to Tom that she will be okay, there are again opportunities to help Ali and the children. She is committed to ensuring regular counseling for the three children and herself so they can continue on with their lives in the wake of trauma. She wants to ensure that the kids can go to outdoor camps this summer and possibly travel with them to visit family and friends and enjoy the company of people who will help them celebrate Tom. And of course, she will need to continue to pay for childcare and manage all of the household expenses.
And with that, we ask again for your support of Ali and the children if you are in a position to do so. As always, emotional support is equally as important and helpful, so please do not discount the value of just witnessing Ali’s grief so that she is not alone.
With love and gratitude,
Sarah Hall and Sarah Benstraum
