The Transnational Institute of Social Ecology (TRISE) is glad to announce its next conference on 25th – 27th October 2024 in Athens, Greece!

Title: The Politics of Social Ecology: From Theory to Praxis

Context

Amidst the multiple crisis of our times, citizens around the world are realizing that building another world is not only desirable, but also possible. At the Transnational Institute of Social Ecology (TRISE), we believe that radical change starts from the understanding that an ecological and democratic society is not an abstract dream, but a practical possibility within our reach.

To achieve such change, the ideas of social ecology and Communalism provide a revolutionary agenda towards a such a society, a communal alternative oriented towards human needs, responding to ecological imperatives, and developing a new ethics based on sharing and cooperation. 

In order to achieve this vision of a desirable future, collective answers to multiple challenges need to be explored. For successful and long-lasting alternatives to thrive, connections between these diverse initiatives need to be developed. Their members need to meet, to train, to dialogue, to share strategies and to build their networks.

What is the TRISE International Encounter? 

This is why we are organizing our next International Encounter in Athens on 25-27 October 2024. With this major event, we aim to gather citizens, activists and researchers who are building the communalist alternative from the ground up, here and now, in the core of capitalism.

Concretely, the Encounter will tackle three main themes:

1. Economics & Self-sufficient;

2. Democracy & Self-management; and

3. Global challenges & Common futures.

The event will go beyond the traditional conference format and involve a hybrid and interactive approach, between educational activities, panels and workshops.

The Call for Contributions is now published online and contributions are welcome until the end of May 2024. All information can be found on TRISE website (link below).

How can you contribute to the Encounter? 

To organize this Encounter, we need financial resources which is why we are asking for your support. With your contributions, we will be able to fund the numerous costs that such an event requires.

We estimate the minimum budget required to organize the event to be 2000 euros. This will cover the main costs, which include the venue for the Encounter, the provision of food & drinks to participants, supporting the travel costs of speakers, as well as the online promotion of the event. 

Who is behind the International Encounter?

The Transnational Institute of Social Ecology (TRISE) is a transnational network of activists, scholars and researchers founded in Greece in 2013. TRISE currently holds more than 50 members mainly situated in different parts of Europe.

We also operate an open social space in the heart of Athens, Greece, where seminars, workshops, screenings, and other similar activities are being held regularly.

Over the years we have organized multiple open and international Conferences in Greece. They have become meeting points for social ecology-oriented activists and scholars in Europe and beyond.

We publish the proceedings to ensure the ideas debated during the event can reach a wider audience. Our last book, titled “Social Ecology and the Right to the City” was published in 2019 by Black Rose Books. The next work, “Power to Create, Power to Destroy: Towards Cultures of Resistance & Radical Social Change”, will be published by the end of 2024/early 2025 by Punctum Books .
