Milisa Mathiso comes from a township called Zolani near the town of Ashton, which is 174 km from Cape Town. To a visitor it looks like a valley of plenty - it is extremely beautiful and very rich. However it is also an area marked by poverty and inequality. Zolani is not a safe place for any child to grow up. There is one school in Zolani and the literacy age is 14 and higher with grade 8.
Milisa will soon turn 19 and she has just completed her high school (matriculation) Her saving grace 10 years ago was finding dance classes in Zolani. She soon realized that dance was her passion. Milisa is a natural dancer in Contemporary, Ballet, Hip Hop and Musical Theatre. She has won many awards and competitions.
Milisa has just been accepted at the prestigious Cape Academy of Performing Arts in Cape Town. This is a three year course. She has been given a 75% bursary for the tuition. Unfortunately living expenses and uniform are not included. Her living expenses will include accommodation, personal hygiene products, transport and food. Outings to the theatre, exams and competitions are also not included in the bursary. Uniform ie: leotards, shoes, ballet skirts, T Bar Latin style shoes, pointe shoes, leg warmers, shorts and tops will also be required.
Milisa will start at CAPA on the 21 January 2020, so funds are needed as soon as possible so that she can settle into her new life in Cape Town. To have your support will mean that Milisa's dream for the last 7 years can become a reality and she can continue to study Dance and all aspects of the Arts and Theatre. Milisa's goal at the end of the 3 year course is to join an established dance company in South Africa or overseas.
I, Mary Corpe Silver have been Milisa's teacher for the last 7 years, and I am so proud of her achievements. It has really been an honour and a privilege to work with her and to watch her grow from a child to a beautiful, determined, hard working and dedicated young woman.
