Support Tommy to Restore Rural Mountain Roads
Donation protected
My name is Suzannah Park and my partner, Tommy Hudgins, and his team have been working on the roads up in Yancey County nonstop for weeks since Hurricane Helene tore through our community.
Tommy and his family have lived in this rural mountain community for five generations on lower browns creek. He is man of all trades but mostly repairs and builds bridges and gravel roads that wind through the mountains near his home. He processes the trees he takes down with his one man, old timey saw mill. He's helping a lot of low income families free of charge, and will continue to now that FEMA and the national guard have left the area. He knows all these back roads and many of them are not state maintained. Many folks don't have the funds nor the equipment to manage the amount of repair needed without the support of our community based workers helping out.
Sadly, Tommy's dump truck didn't have flood insurance nor survive the storm. He never asks for things for himself, but I can see how much not having a working dump truck is limiting his work. If you are able to help me raise the funds for a replacement used dump truck that would make a world of difference in our community.
- It will make it possible for folks to get out to the store, to their jobs, to their doctor - as well as family, friends and emergency vehicles being able to get to them.
- It will also greatly support the team with the huge amount of clean up work of wrecked building material and trash that is scattered everywhere.
Happy to answer any questions you may have.
Thank you so much for helping with this wheels on the ground work as we continue to recover after the storm.
Warmly,
Suzannah
Quote from local client:
"Tommy will always be a blessing particularly after the Storm we've just all experience. Tommy operates heavy equipment and owns his own excavator and went immediately to the fire station to see how he could help put roads back together and get people out of their destroyed homes. I was one of those people whose road had washed out and had no way of getting out from our property. Tommy, through his volunteer work with the fire department, came up to reconstruct my road, cleaned up my drainage ditches so the water would go in the right direction and remove the large trees and rocks that had washed into our yard and across our driveway. What I saw in Tommy was a willingness and a desire to help his community and now he could use the community’s help to continue this work." - Tim Henry, Burnsville resident
