Support Tonya Powell In Overcoming Her Cancer Battle

Tonya Powell is a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, Apostle, counselor, author & friend. She is the most loving, self-less, caring & giving woman who always ensures the well-being of others before herself. She has 11 children, one deceased grandbaby & one grandbaby on the way. Many call her their spiritual mother or covering as she continually pours into the lives of others and covers them with prayer, counsel and words of wisdom.

Over the past 4 years, she has demonstrated so much strength & courage as she endured much trauma, heart break and pain from helping to care for her father who passed way from lung cancer, losing her first grandbaby and more.

On March 8, 2023, after getting her annual mammogram & being referred out for further imaging & testing, Tonya was diagnosed with Invasive Ductile Carcinoma (breast cancer -Her 2 negative, estrogen & progesterone positive). She has undergone 2 biopsies that revealed two areas that were cancerous & imaging shows a third spot that is also abnormal. The surgical oncologist recommends Tonya undergo a mastectomy at which time they will do more pathology testing to determine if she will need further treatment including chemotherapy and/or radiation.

Due to all of her medical appointments she has had to take a lot of leave without pay, spend monies on travel, food, hotel rooms as well as medical bills not covered by insurance. This has only been the beginning. If nothing changes, she will undergo a bilateral mastectomy on May 29th, which will initially put her out of work for 6-8 weeks. In addition, her husband must take off work for a little while to care for her. She will be trying to get short term disability, but she will be required to first miss 7 consecutive days of work before it would take effect & the amount will only be a portion of her regular monthly income. After the initial surgery she will also undergo reconstructive surgery and revisions over the next couple of years. We’re praying also for no chemo or radiation to be necessary because if so, she will miss a lot more work & can potentially lose her job.
