Support the Serangan Beach School: Empowering Local Children Through Education
The Serangan Beach School, located in Lombok, Indonesia, provides local children with the invaluable opportunity to learn English every Sunday. As the international presence in Lombok has been growing extremely fast over the last 10 years, learning English is an essential skill for the students to unlock opportunities to change their lives
Some friends and I have been lucky enough to be a part of this program since October. While we can't attend every week, we try to be there as much as possible. When we’re not leading the class, the head teacher takes the lead, providing guidance and structure for the students.
A typical Sunday morning consists of everyone gathering at the school around 8 where we do a beach cleanup of the Serangan beach. Through this, we are teaching the students the importance of protecting the environment and keeping their home clean. This is something that is not taught at a young age as many locals haven't learned the impacts of improperly disregarding waste. Every single student runs around with the biggest smile competing to pickup the most trash and gets some energy out before class begins. After the trash pickup we go back to the school site and begin our lesson of the day. We usually last about an hour before focus is lost but we give each student a chance to practice speaking and interacting in English. The students eagerly take turns practicing simple phrases, answering questions, and engaging in basic conversations. It’s a relaxed but productive environment where they feel comfortable making mistakes and learning through play. We also incorporate games and activities to make the lessons more engaging, ensuring that each student gets the chance to participate and improve their skills. We have seen major improvements in every student since we started helping out. The kids are always so incredibly grateful for the opportunity to learn and participate in the school. After every lesson, they express their thanks with big smiles and words of appreciation, often thanking us for teaching them and for giving them a chance to practice their English. Their gratitude is heartfelt, and it’s clear that they value this time as a special opportunity. It’s incredibly touching to see how much they cherish the lessons and the chance to better themselves, and their enthusiasm reminds us just how much of a difference we’re making in their lives.
This bring us to the reason for this fundraiser. The current school is in urgent need of renovations in order to accommodate all the students and provide a better environment for learning. Currently, students sit on the sand, and the school lacks essential materials. Each students notebook is falling apart and half of the pens don't work anymore. The desks are just old pieces of wood that the set in the sand to have a hard surface to write on, The structure itself needs significant repair to offer shelter from the wind and rain, ensuring classes can continue uninterrupted.
The plan with this money is to create an environment that is better suited for the students to learn. We will completely renovate the structure making it larger so more students can fit, enclosed to protect from the elements and with a new roof to prevent leaks. We will also add proper desks and chairs so students aren't sitting in the sand. The money will also go towards new supplies for each student so they can have their own new notebooks, pens/pencils and folders/bags so they can keep the materials safe.
We appreciate the donations and are looking forward to showing you all the results of your hard earned money!
