ALS, or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease), is an incredibly challenging and progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. For many, it might bring to mind the viral Ice Bucket Challenge on social media, which aimed to raise awareness and funds for ALS research. Yet, the playful nature of that challenge stands in stark contrast to the cruel realities of the disease.
In late October 2022, my brother shared with me his diagnosis. I vividly remember when he first called, having recently moved to Florida, and described the sudden and unexpected muscle loss in his arms. He likened the sensation to having had a stroke. Despite numerous medical consultations, the diagnosis was elusive at first. But as days turned into weeks and weeks into months, the symptoms intensified: muscle twitching increased, and his strength and mobility decreased.
Today, as of 16th August 2023, the progression of the disease has left him unable to move either arm or his left leg. His once strong back muscles have deteriorated, and what used to be a few hours on a breathing machine has now escalated to almost an entire day. Simple pleasures like enjoying the sun have become daunting tasks, as he fears he won't be able to catch his breath. Activities that many of us take for granted, like feeding ourselves, bathing, or even changing clothes, are now beyond his capacity, making him entirely reliant on the care and assistance of others.
The average life expectancy for someone diagnosed with ALS is typically 3 to 5 years from the onset of symptoms, but this can vary significantly. Some individuals live much longer, while others may have a more aggressive form of the disease. There is currently no cure for ALS, a fact that weighs heavily on our hearts. Yet, amidst all this, my brother finds solace in his faith, holding on to hope and peace. Our family continues to pray for a miracle.
The doctors have suggested a motorized wheelchair and continuous care to ensure his comfort. ALS has certainly been a daunting challenge, and it's surreal to witness someone you love transform so drastically. But in these trying times, it's essential to be present, cherish every moment, and remember that love and support can make all the difference.
