Support Victim of Racial Violence on Yale Campus

Hi everyone. I need to share a tragic event that occurred on the Yale Campus on Friday, September 2nd around 12 AM. We were walking home on York Street when my partner was assaulted by a group of five to six young white men, possibly Yale students. They ran into us and immediately became aggressive and violent. My partner, Franklin, is a 25-year-old Latino male that is currently a New Haven resident. These boys yelled racial slurs toward him ("sp*c” and the "n-word") and began punching him in the face. My partner tried to ask why they were swinging at him and calling him these horrible names, and this angered them even more. Two boys within the group began punching him in the face at the same time. Once all the attention was drawn towards my partner who was on the ground bleeding from his head and face, the group of boys disappeared.

A kind group of Yale students saw us sitting on the pavement and came over to help. They called a friend, who is an EMT, and he came to assess my partner and wrapped his head to stop the bleeding. We then took him to the Yale New Haven Emergency Room.

Franklin has a broken jaw. He has fractures on both sides of his face and had to get 2 staples on his scalp. It's been 2 days since the incident and he can barely eat or drink. He's constantly in pain and won't even hear from an oral surgeon until Tuesday. We were told his surgery could take a week or more to schedule.

We are asking for support from family, friends, and the community. Not only did these boys hurt him physically, they are hurting us financially. The ER doctor said he has to get oral and facial surgery to realign his jaw and teeth. All of his medical bills are going to add up fast, all because he was the target of racial violence within the New Haven and Yale community. Funds raised will be used for these medical bills as well as other necessities and expenses while Franklin recovers.

We are working with the New Haven police department to find the attackers. We appreciate all the help and support we've already received from witnesses of the attack.
