Who we are:
Voodoo Leatherworks opened its doors in April 2013 to serve the local kink, swinger, poly, and LGBTQ communities. Although it has been much more than just a playspace, the revenue generated by play parties allowed us to pay the bills, support the community through education and social events, and to also support local, sex-positive, non-profit organizations and their causes.
Since opening, Voodoo has drawn thousands of members, hosted hundreds of events, and has sponsored events and organizations from across the country. Some of these events and organizations have included:
Colorado LeatherFest
Thunder in the Mountains
EXILE
Marquis Lifestyle Center
Colorado Springs PrideFest
Denver PrideFest
Pueblo PrideFest
TESSA
Urban Peak
Inside Out Youth Services
Southwest Leather Conference
Leather Leadership Conference
We have also been proud to see some of our members earn Leather titles including Mr/Ms/Miss Leather Colorado, Colorado Bootblack, Southwest Bootblack, Colorado Master/slave, Southwest Master/slave and International Person of Leather.
What we do:
Voodoo not only provides a safe and well maintained space for members to play, but we also maintain a library and host social and educational events for free! We've done this because we believe education should be as accessible as possible, and we'd hate to see someone miss out on learning something new because of financial issues. We've also maintained some of the lowest (if not *the* lowest) membership fees and door fees of most any club in the country for the same reasons.
We provide a retail space for local artists to sell their work while only retaining 10% in commissions from most of our vendors. We do this to support our local gear-makers and provide them with a regular storefront that is accessible by our membership.
COVID response:
On March 13th, before any state or federal orders were issued, Voodoo opted to close our doors because it was the right thing to do to help contain the spread of COVID and protect our members and volunteer staff to the best of our ability. We've stayed closed because that, too, was the right thing to do as 120,000+ people across the country (as of June 2020) lost their lives to this disease, and those numbers continue to climb rapidly in some states.
During this time, we've not asked for donations as we felt it wasn't the right time to do so. Over the last few years, Voodoo has been saving to purchase a building in order to expand our services to our rapidly-growing membership. We felt that we had a good financial buffer to survive without income for several months—and with many of our members facing financial hardships during this difficult time, we didn't want to take anything from our members that would make their difficulties any worse.
Where we are now:
After 4 months without any income, Voodoo is starting to face the very real possibility of closing our doors for good. We are currently working on a plan to reopen the club again soon—with limited capacity and strict safety measures—but it may still take a while before we can make that plan work and even longer before we can go back to regular, pre-COVID operations. Even after we open, there will still be many people who want to support the club but can't attend our events because of their risk profile .
So all that said, your club could use your support.
What we need:
Voodoo is raising funds for the sole purpose of ensuring our survival through the COVID crisis by asking for donations to support our monthly operating expenses. We will re-post this fundraiser every month from now until we get to a point where we have a regular, predictable revenue stream and are able to pay all of our regular operating expenses without any additional support.
Voodoo guarantees that these funds will only be used for essential operating expenses (rent, utilities, etc.) and none of these funds will go to benefit any individual.
We have been so proud to be able to serve such a great community and we will do everything within our means to continue that service for many, many years to come. Thank you all in advance for your support, and I sincerely look forward to seeing all of you down here for one big ass Post-Apocalypse Party when this is all over.
Respectfully in Leather,
Paul Thorns
