Support Walpole Elders - New Center
Donation protected
Walpole elders currently utilize the Aurelia Newell Senior Center. Located in the Town Hall, it consists of one large room, a very small kitchen with a cafeteria type walk through, and one bathroom. Although this space was adequate years ago when first dedicated, it is now far from sufficient for the growing senior population.
Among other minor inadequacies, the current space is problematic for the following reasons:
Lack of privacy - there is no area that sufficiently provides privacy for conversations to discuss financial assistance or medical needs.
One bathroom - When in use, should another senior need to use the facilities he/she must go to the other end of the hallway to a non-handicap bathroom. The distance alone can be a challenge if mobility issues exist.
Lack of programs – the current center is not set up to run additional programs. Given the growing elder population, a center is a place for socialization and is critical to the healthy living of our elders.
Being surrounded by others and having interaction is healthier for elder members of the community than being home alone and isolated. If a new center could provide more classes, variety of programs, and presentations it would attract more participants.
In addition to the Town of Walpole funding and available grant(s), The Friends have agreed to attempt to raise upward of $750,000 to help support this long overdue project. The Friends believe that a new center will eliminate the above-mentioned inadequacies while providing a clean and welcoming environment for our elders. It should be noted that every other town surrounding Walpole has a true center for their elders and not just a room.
The Friends of Walpole’s Elders (the Friends) is a volunteer group and a 501(c)(3) organization. Our ongoing mission is assisting the elder residents of the Town of Walpole. Our work includes subsidizing programs and holiday parties, paying monthly mailings, and in the past giving financial assistance to provide vans used to transport elders to and from their existing Senior Center.
