2023 Western Uganda Champions Tooro Lions rugby union football club is the pride of Fort Portal and we need your help to ensure our team can continue to be an important part of our community.
The club was founded officially in 2020 having existed informally as a community club building the spirit of rugby in schools, institutions and universities since 2016. It is closely linked to several schools such as Nyakasura School, St Leo's boy's school and Kyembambe Girls, where our players have helped to promote and coach rugby.
The club hopes to attract more players to the sport with the end goal of providing boys and girls with a self-sustaining rugby academy that will promote sport, employment and vocational skills.
However, the club faces many challenges in achieving our goals:
- Our facilities are lacking, with the pitch in poor condition (and shared with the local football team). We desperately need support to help obtain more suitable playing facilities for our matches and training, helping to protect our players from injury. The cost of this is approximated at £6,500 per year for rent or £50,000 to purchase and transform a suitable location.
- The transport costs are significant, with our closest opposition almost 200 km (4/5 hours drive) away. We need funding to travel to our matches, with many matches lost due to the sheer cost of driving the team a minimum of 4/5 hours for each away game, which also requires accommodation after the game due to the dangers of driving at night. This cost is approximated at £3,500 per year
- There are major challenges and costs associated with obtaining basic equipment. Our current equipment consists of 2 rugby balls. To achieve our goals we need to obtain equipment in the form of rugby balls, kicking tees, lifting blocks, rugby boots, scrum caps, jerseys and portable medical equipment. The expected initial cost of this is £1,000.
We would be very grateful for any support you could offer us to ensure that we can continue to build on the start we have made in promoting rugby in Western Uganda and ensuring there is a pathway for young people to take part in rugby and through that improve their opportunties in life.
