It’s time that President Biden recognized the contributions of whistleblowers and their storied history at the national level. We urge him to sign an Executive Order mandating that all federal agencies recognize July 30th as National Whistleblower Day each year. The Executive Order should authorize federal agencies to inform their employees of their right to blow the whistle and to use the day to recognize the contributions of whistleblowers throughout history.
This is a grassroots campaign led by and for whistleblowers. Jane Turner and fellow whistleblowers Bunny Greenhouse, Fred Whitehurst, Aaron Westrick, and Sherron Watkins lead the campaign.
Why It's Important
- Honor History – Protecting whistleblowers is in our country’s DNA. The first whistleblower law was signed by the Continental Congress in 1778. Since then, whistleblowers have become essential to keeping our democracy healthy. This campaign is being launched on March 2nd to commemorate the 160th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the False Claims Act, which remains one of the strongest whistleblower laws in the country.
- Change Culture – We can only root out fraud, corruption, and waste by addressing the culture that silences those trying to speak the truth. This Executive Order will require every government agency to highlight the tools and protections to blow the whistle at every employee’s disposal. It will also require every agency to acknowledge past whistleblowers.
- Demand Justice and Respect – Whistleblowers have sacrificed their careers, health, and safety while exposing waste and returning billions of dollars to the U.S. Government. It’s past time that they are recognized.
Donations for this Campaign will be used to:
- Pay a professional lobbyist – Making National Whistleblower Day permanent requires an Executive Order. To make that happen, we need to work with professional lobbyists who understand how to get the Executive Branch to take action on this issue and have the networks to push this to the front of their desks.
- Grassroots Organizing/Marketing – The success of this campaign is also dependent on grassroots organizing. For this to succeed, we need to pay people to train volunteers on how to participate in the campaign. To expand our reach to a broad number of people, we will hire marketing services to get the message out.
- Provide Educational Materials – Educational materials include printing reports and flyers and distributing books.
