Hi, I'm Jabez, a 14-year-old boy from Ethiopia battling a serious kidney disease called Stage 5 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). I was born with only one kidney, and now it's failing.
My Diagnosis:
- Stage 5 CKD: My kidneys are only functioning at about 10% of their normal capacity. This means my body can't properly filter waste and toxins from my blood.
- Solitary Kidney with Hydronephrosis: My remaining kidney is enlarged and has a condition called hydronephrosis, which means it has difficulty draining urine.
- Comorbidities: I also have anemia, bone mineral disease, and high blood pressure, all of which are common complications of CKD.
My Upcoming Treatment
I'm receiving dialysis three times a week. This life-saving treatment will help remove waste from my blood, but it's not a cure. I will also be taking medications to manage my other health conditions.
A Ray of Hope: My Mother’s Gift
In a heartwarming act of love and selflessness, my mother has stepped forward to donate one of his kidneys to me. This generous gift will give me a chance at a normal life and alleviate the need for lifelong dialysis.
The Challenge: A Transplant Abroad
Unfortunately, the necessary medical expertise and facilities for a kidney transplant aren't available in Ethiopia. Therefore, I must undergo the procedure in another country. This presents additional challenges, including significant travel and medical costs.
