Today most news outlets are controlled by a few huge, financially powerful companies which is known as media consolidation. These organizations cover large markets and report very limited amount of true local news. This is why it is vital to support publications covering their local communities. These groups are able to operate and serve our community without being concerned about dividends and profit. Although they are not concerned with about profits there still is a cost to bringing local news to our community.
One such news organization is Yonkers Voice. Ru Ros, the CEO of Yonkers Voice, has been painstakingly reporting our community news for 14 years.
Ru has been able to accomplish being a news resource for our community with limited financial support. Most times Ru Ros uses his personal finances to purchase camera equipment, audio equipment, hire journalists to simultaneously cover local news, and host the website just to name a few. Local news happens every day for free but covering it with integrity and accuracy is not. The limited local ads that helped barely covered costs has become lost revenue due to the pandemic. Ru Ros himself has now fell victim to COVID19 while covering a local story.
On another note, Yonkers Voice takes that extra step once the story is reported and the cameras are off. They try to help those in need find jobs, they donate food, clothes, and cash to the homeless, they try to help our homeless population get their lives back on track, contribute to funeral services to help families in their darkest time, and they cover charity events as a public service.
Yonkers Voice has given a voice to the voiceless when the cameras are on and off.
