A week ago, last Thursday, Zach Geisler had a large seizure while at home with his father Joe and twin brother Sam. Sam called 911. They went to the ER where they ran a battery of tests on his brain and heart (his heart rate was 220 beats per minute when the ambulance arrived).
The CAT scan on his head revealed an abnormality, and an MRI confirmed a tumor in his brain. So far it is benign. They also said his heart was in atrial fibrillation and he had a flutter in his heart. Though these were concurrent issues, the doctors said they didn’t relate to each other.
Zach has had two operations on his brain. The first was to extract a tumor sample and put in a catheter to relieve pressure. The second was to put in a permanent shunt with a tube that runs internally to his stomach for any fluid overflow.
He is mending well but the hospital bills will be devastating for Joe, a retired public school art teacher and single parent (he lost his beloved wife Joanna to cancer seven years ago).
The Geisler family is beloved by so many of us in Newington. Please consider helping them navigate this difficult journey, and remind them they will not walk it alone.
