SUPPORT BLACK BERRY: A Dystopian Romeo & Juliet that Breaks Barriers

Imagine a world where love is a rebellion, where identity is a risk, and survival is a fight against tyranny. BLACK BERRY*is that world—a dystopian reimagining of Romeo & Juliet that challenges the boundaries of love, culture, and resistance.

Premiering at the Impro Theatre on **Saturday 11/2 and Sunday 11/3**, BLACK BERRY tells the story of Berryanna, a Black American girl, and Rouzbeh, an Iranian boy, whose love faces impossible odds. Under the new authoritarian regime of Leader Tyn E Hanz, Rouzbeh is being deported, and their forbidden love is a beacon of defiance in a society that punishes difference.

This is more than just a play—it's a platform for underrepresented voices.

Why Is This Important?

Representation matters. According to the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, of the top 100 films in 2019, less than 1% of characters were from the Middle Eastern or North African (MENA) region, and only 1.3% of characters across 1,300 films were MENA. BLACK BERRY directly addresses this gap by giving voice to communities that are too often silenced.

In a time where stories of diverse identities are rare, this production brings together a Black girl and an Iranian boy—characters that defy stereotypes and face issues many of us are passionate about: immigration, cultural identity, and the right to love freely.

Who Is BLACK BERRY For?

BLACK BERRY is for everyone who believes in the power of diversity on stage. It’s for those who want to see stories that reflect the complexity of our world—stories of love, survival, and hope. Your donation is a direct investment in a more inclusive future for theater.
