Keep Mom Sherod "Deb" on the Farm

Dear Friends and Family,
You may already know her. Perhaps she has cut your hair, or helped with stage makeup before a show, or taught you some cool facts about native plants. Maybe you've just seen her doing karaoke at a bar or dancing to one of her favorite local bands. She's our mom and she's an unforgettable character. If you've ever met her you'll always remember her. She'll talk to anyone, at any time, and is utterly unafraid to tell people what's on her mind.
Deb Sherod has been cutting hair, planting gardens, and tearing it up on Whidbey since she moved the family here from Seattle to be closer to her own dad and his farm. She inherited that farm when he passed in 2002, but now she needs your help to keep it and one day (far into the future, God willing), pass it on to her children, Sasha and Shane.
Early this year during a checkup the doctors found a lump in her left breast. It was small, and they thought it was nothing, but had it tested just to be safe. Turns out the lump was early-stage breast cancer. Not the kind of news anyone wants to hear, especially when your kids have grown up and moved off the Island – one of them all the way to Boston.
Treatment is expensive, and when you run your own business—as mom has with Hare Today for most of the last 20-something years—you also rely on that business' income for health insurance and to cover household expenses. There is no paid sick leave. When those household expenses involve maintaining the family farm there's really no wiggle room.
Mom had a full mastectomy in May, and so far everything looks good. No signs of cancer! While we are keeping our fingers crossed the prognosis stays positive, our mom needs help while she rests and recovers. She's a strong, independent woman and we know this won't keep her down, but even the strong need some help once in a while.
We're asking for $10,000 to cover any additional treatments and follow ups, bring in some help to keep the farm up and running, and pay the rent for Hare Today so she can get back to the work she loves once she's rested.
Please help us be there for her and support her during these difficult times. Let Mom Sherod (aka Deb), know that she's cared for.
With Warm Regards,
Shane and Sasha
