Supporting Bali through COVID-19

Donation protected
The people of Bali are going through an extremely tough time due to the global outbreak of COVID-19 and the halt on international travel. With the vast majority of Balinese people relying directly or indirectly on the tourism industry for survival and tourist numbers estimated to be down over 95%, many families have lost their only source of income.

While all of us have been affected by this global crisis, many of us are still fortunate enough to be in a position to help. Even if you can only spare a few dollars, that will still make a big difference for a family in need.

This fundraiser was set up to coordinate resources to support the people of the Klungkung regency. It is not a major tourist area but a lot of families in the villages rely on family members who go away to work in the tourism industry. Now that there are almost zero visitors from overseas, everyone is back in their village and their families are struggling to survive. Most people in Bali live paycheck to paycheck and now have no way to meet their basic day to day needs.

The funds raised will be used to buy food & hygiene packs that include staple foods (rice, noodles, eggs, vegetables, oil), protective masks and soap & disinfectant. These packs will be distributed to those who are struggling most due to the impacts of COVID-19. We will be keeping a record of all goods purchased and where and how they are used. This information will be made publicly available and posted to this page.

This fund raising project started with Agung (founder of villa rental agency Puri Asia) having to send his staff home to their villages on unpaid leave because there is simply no work. Being a small agency he has no way to pay them now that tourism in Bali has ground to a halt. Many of his staff are from the Klungkung regency, as is Agung. He understands the struggles of the people in his own village and wants to utilise his resources and team to coordinate support and help people get by in these unprecedented times.

The collection and distribution of the funds and goods is being managed on the ground in Bali by Agung Juliarta and his team at Puri Asia. His friends, James Ambler and Hayley Coeland, are providing admin support from Australia and New Zealand.

How the funds will be distributed

Our goal is to deliver food packs to 500 families. Agung and his team will purchase the supplies and assemble the packs. Volunteers from the volunteer organisation Yayasan Relawan Bali  will carry out contactless pick up and deliver the packs within the Klungkung regency.  Only individuals from the region will make the deliveries to avoid spreading COVID-19 from other areas. Yayasan Relawan Bali is a well established volunteer organisation with a good understanding of who is in need in the villages of Klung Kung and will coordinate with the local organisation, Satgas COVID-19, which was set up to manage the COVID-19 situation.

What will be delivered

Each family will get:

5 KG rice
6 noodle packets
6 eggs
1ltr oil
4 x Protective masks
1 x Hand/dish soap
1 x Disinfectant (product can also be used for laundry)

Cost for each pack is around IDR 150,000 per family or AUD $15.

If we are able to meet the needs each month then any extra will be put into funding for the following month. Any excess we will donate to Yayasan Relawan Bali  for their continued work in the community.

We invite you to donate if you can. If you can’t then you can still be a big help by sharing this with your network!

Thank you in advance for your support!
