Supporting Billy Root Through Kidney Failure

I met Billy through his wife Sue (she and I worked together) nearly 15 years ago. It's not every day you meet someone who is always smiling, always willing to help, and never wanting to burden you with their problems. That is Billy, 100%. Back then, he would pick Sue up from work with little Madison in the back seat. I remember being in awe of the way he looked at Madison like she was the only little girl in the entire world and how he was such a devoted husband to Sue; he always -no exceptions - put his family first. What he's going through would be awful for anyone, but knowing what kind of man he is, makes it that much more devastating.

As a child, Billy was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and has since developed hypertension and heart disease. Over time his kidney function has been declining - and lately, declining rapidly. He is now at only 8% kidney function. Billy needs a kidney but hasn't gotten a donor yet (they still aren't giving up hope for that!!!). Since he hasn't received one yet, he needs to start dialysis immediately.

This has put the family in a really bad financial situation. Billy is the primary breadwinner and is unable to work. Sue also needs this time off work to take care of him and to take extensive training to administer home dialysis. When Billy needed heart surgery and couldn't work, it, unfortunately, caused them to deplete their savings and has left them without anything to fall back on. The cost of dialysis and related medical expenses, combined with the loss of income, has put an enormous financial strain on their family. Anything you can do, no matter how small, will help them get through this.

Most of us had no idea how much Billy has been suffering, how much his health has impacted their family, or how much this would affect their financial situation. Despite his pride and reluctance to ask for help, Billy needs our support more than ever.
