On December 11, 2023, Derrick became the sole survivor of a murder-suicide that claimed the lives of his mother, Schinara Patterson , and siblings Kiziah Cone, and Zi’Miyra Patterson , . Shot by his mother's husband, Derrick sustained a single gun shot wound to his head while peacefully sleeping .

Now, he embarks on a journey of healing, both physically and emotionally. This GoFundMe campaign aims to ease the financial burdens Derrick faces as he recovers.
