Supporting Helen Through ALS

At a time in her life when she was hoping to ‘stop and smell the roses’, Helen Spencer received devastating news. In the summer of 2020, she was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis).
ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a horrific illness that slowly robs the body of its ability to function but leaves the mind untouched.
Helen now deals with the debilitating impact of ALS on her daily life. It’s stressful for her not to be able to do the things she always has and she’s very worried about how her disease will progress. She’s also very worried about her financial situation.
After 10 years of working at a job she loved, Helen can no longer physically perform the job she was hired to do. She has no work pension available to her, so she’s left only her government pension to rely on.
Since Helen’s physical limitations are already so debilitating, her partner has become her full-time caregiver, looking after all of Helen’s daily needs such as bathing, dressing and feeding. Because of this, Helen’s partner has devoted herself to caregiving and has put her career on hold for the time being.
The cost of the equipment needed for Helen to live with ALS is exorbitant. She needs a specialized wheelchair, ramps to access the outdoors, breathing and feeding equipment and so much more as the illness progresses. She will also need additional Nurses and Personal Support Workers to assist with Helen’s daily needs.
At 68 years old, Helen’s situation is dire. This will only become more challenging as time goes on.
