Supporting Lane Unhjem and Family

Lane is currently hospitalized at Trinity Medical Center in Minot, ND.  He suffered a major heart attack after his combine started on fire and he worked ever so hard to get it out. This page will be updated frequently on Lane's recovery process. He still has a very long road ahead of him with medical bills that keep piling up.  The family wants to thank the community for everything that they have done so far to help. Words cannot explain how much it means to them during such a difficult time.

Lane's Story and Progress
-As told by his Daughter, Samantha Coates-

As many of you know we had quite a bit of excitement Wednesday. Dad’s combine is not salvageable due to the fire. He was working hard to get the fire out and it was too much for his heart. I am going to do my best to keep everyone updated on his progress. To catch everyone up to pace, here is the last few days.

Wednesday 9-9-20
Doc came out. He has the 100% blocked one that they know about from 2-3 years ago. They weren’t concerned because 2 others helped feed that part of the heart with o2 one more than the other. So of those two the one was 95% blocked, they put a stent in that one. The other is 60% blocked but flow is fine so no stent. His EKG normaliZed and is good now. He handled it great. He is in ICU in the cooler due to cpr having been done and to help with any possible cardiac and brain swelling from that. He can be Extubated whenever he wakes up. He will get an ultrasound in the morning to check the cardiac tissue out.
He’ll be sedated until 2ish tomorrow for hypothermia protocol due to the cardiac arrest aspect. Once that’s over they’ll wean off the propofol and such until he wakes

Thursday 9-10-20
Good morning- he had an uneventful night! Thank heavens! Ultrasound at 9 and he will be out most of the day but will be really sore when he does wake up.
They are slowly warming him up and that will take 12 hours and then they will take him off sedation and we will see - so about 6:00am - the ultra sound looked good.

Friday 9-11-20
He’s slowly waking up!! They are gonna try to take him off the ventilator around 9:30-10am...
They decide to wait to try to remove the ventilator until late this afternoon.
He gets very agitated with being tied down and in the hospital, it’s not good for him. And he has developed a bit of a lung infection.
So they are keeping him as sedated as possible while also keeping his BP & heart rate up.
We can’t thank everyone enough for the continued prayers, harvest help, food help, helping to organizing everything and being there for us during this time. You are all so amazing and we can’t express how much you all mean to us and how much we appreciate you.

Thank you all!!!

Saturday 9-12-20
They have put in a new pick line in and have done a CT, we should have those and other test results this evening. They did put the ventilator back so he will rest better, he gets very agitated upon waking and he is not strong enough for the stress.
So we need to slow things down here and give him time as this will allow more time for his body and mind heal better and faster.
Keep praying and sending healing vibes!

Weekend update for everyone. We are still not out of the woods. But we are still here. Thank you for the prayers, support and all the healing vibes!!

They have put in a ART line in and have done a CT, we should have those and other test results this evening. They did put the ventilator back so he will rest better, he gets very agitated upon waking and he is not strong enough for the stress.
So we need to slow things down here and give him time to heal.

Sunday 9-13-20
Tabitha and Sam traveled to Minot to visit with the doctors. Lane’s kidneys and liver have been struggling. With his heart not pumping to full capacity and the shock of CPR to the whole body, dialysis is needed. He does have pneumonia, they are treating with antibiotics and drain tubes to keep the fluid off his lungs.

Monday 9-14-20
All labs and vitals are holding steady. With a slight improvement to the liver.
Dialysis has started and will be a 4 hour wait to see how he does with it. Once dialysis is done we will have more news.

Tuesday 9-15-20
Lane is sedated & intubated with D10 for blood sugar & lactulose for ammonia levels The precedex was discontinued this morning. He is on antibiotics every 6hours roughly. They switched his food and the rate to try and help stabilize his sugars. That and with his liver enzymes going from 10,000 to 3000 (normal is 100) should both help with his blood sugar. No more ART-line as his pressures and such have been holding and doing well. They did start the picc line today. His kidney BUN to creatinine levels have improved but have a ways to go. Even with dialysis he did have a small amount of urine output. They will decide after doing blood and arterial blood gas labs if they will do dialysis tomorrow. His heart ejection fraction was 20-25% as of 9-10 . They will wait until there’s a bit more improvement to recheck.
He’s not out of the woods yet but he’s making his way and God willing he continues.

Wednesday 9-16-20
Based on blood work, they did dialysis again. He is Handling dialysis well! His platelets are low (66k) so the cardiologist is monitoring closely. They did take him off versed and he will wake more through the day. Lung X-ray looked good. Echo tomorrow.
Everything is moving in the right direction, and these small improvements are big steps; so one day at a time for now.
