Dear friends, family, and compassionate supporters,
We are reaching out today with hopes of assistance. As many of you already may know, Mamie has Lupus- an autoimmune disease that can affect various parts of the body. Just 3 days after her wedding, Mamie began feeling extremely fatigued, had experienced horrific headaches, body aches, kidney pain, and chest discomfort. Recognizing the symptoms as possibly related to her Lupus, she sought doctors and had numerous tests and evaluations completed. Her Rheumatologist was later able to confirm that her Lupus was active, and she was amid an “active Lupus flare.” To combat the disease, she was prescribed multiple medications and steroids, but these medications further compromised her already weakened immune system.
Heartbreakingly, due to her compromised immune system, Mamie’s condition rapidly deteriorated. She endured excruciating pain, with levels reaching an unbearable 10/10. On September 18th, she was rushed to the Emergency Room at Portneuf Hospital in Pocatello, Idaho. Unfortunately, she was initially misdiagnosed with gastroenteritis and sent home with pain medication and told to ignore her fever for the next 24-48 hours.
As the day progressed, her condition worsened dramatically. By 9:00pm she had become delusional, her fever spiked 103.5 degrees, and she lost the ability to perform even basic daily tasks- including being able to go to the bathroom on her own. Fearing for Mamie’s life, her spouse urgently took her to Bingham Memorial Hospital in Blackfoot, Idaho.
Upon arrival at Bingham Memorial, medical professionals diagnosed Mamie with sepsis and reported that she was in septic shock. Had much more time gone by before bringing her in, Mamie would likely have been dead. She was immediately transferred into the ICU unit for multiple days as the team of doctors and infectious disease specialists sought to find answers to what was happening to her. According to the health professionals, the septic shock was brought on by a bacterial infection in Mamie’s bloodstream caused by Streptococcus pneumonia.
In addition to the sepsis, Mamie developed a secondary infection in her intestines and bowels that further lead her to experience continued agonizing pain. The specific strain of bacteria responsible for this secondary infection remained a mystery up until early this afternoon. According to Mamie’s medical team and the infections disease experts working on her, they believe the secondary infection was brought on by a different variant of strep- unrelated to the streptococcus pneumonia found in her blood.
While Mamie’s infection has started to improve, her battle with Lupus continues to complicate her full recovery. Within the past few days, her Lupus has caused a collection of fluid around her lungs, and it has been making it increasingly difficult for her to breathe. She is on oxygen during the day, and she needs C PAP treatments to open her lungs at night. Due to these complications, the doctors have decided to proceed by treating both her Lupus and the infection simultaneously- despite the risks associated with treating the Lupus and further compromising her immune system. They feel the benefits of doing both steps outweigh the possibility of complications that would arise if they do not target both at the same time.
The road to recovery is expected to be long and filled with many potential setbacks, but Mamie is determined to keep fighting. As both she and her spouse are currently out of work, due to her compromised immune system and the extent of care she requires, we are seeking your support to help alleviate the financial burden that comes with this medical crisis.
Your generous contributions will go toward medical expenses, ongoing treatments, medication costs, and the day-to-day necessities that Mamie and her family require during this challenging time. Every dollar, every share, and every word of encouragement makes a difference.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for taking the time to read Mamie's story and consider supporting her on this arduous journey. Your kindness and compassion provide strength and hope during these difficult times.
We will keep you updated on Mamie's progress, and please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. Together, we can make a profound difference in Mamie's life and help her overcome the dual challenges she has been facing.
